Simulating changes in polar bear subpopulation growth rate due to legacy persistent organic pollutants – Temporal and spatial trends

چکیده

Although atmospheric concentrations of many conventional persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have decreased in the Arctic over past few decades, levels most POPs and mercury remain high since 1990s or start to increase again areas, especially polar bears. So far, studies generally focused on individual effects POPs, do not directly link POP prey species population-specific parameters. In this study we therefore aimed estimate effect legacy population growth rate nineteen bear subpopulations. We modelled development three scenarios, based sensitivity distributions (SSDs) derived for ecotoxicity data endothermic species. first scenario, bears were HC50 (the concentration at which 50% is affected). The other two scenarios HC5 HC95. Considerable variation could be observed among scenarios. our intermediate predicted subpopulation decline ten out 15 estimated was least reduced Gulf Boothia Foxe Basin. On average, PCB (in ?g/g toxic equivalency (TEQ)) posed largest threat subpopulations, with negative rates majority did find a correlation between changes monitored trends chemical-subpopulation combinations. Modelled increased time, implying decreasing PCBs, DDTs, mercury. Polar subpopulations are reportedly still declining four seven sufficient long-term monitoring available, as reported by IUCN-PBSG. This implies that emerging anthropogenic stressors may affect

Persistent organic pollutants and mercury in marine biota of the Canadian Arctic: an overview of spatial and temporal trends.

This review summarizes and synthesizes the significant amount of data which was generated on mercury (Hg) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Canadian Arctic marine biota since the first Canadian Arctic Contaminants Assessment Report (CACAR) was published in 1997. This recent body of work has led to a better understanding of the current levels and spatial and temporal trends of contamin...

Recommendations for Evaluating Temporal Trends of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Breast Milk

BACKGROUND Biomonitoring data of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in breast milk are increasingly collected and available for quantitative analysis of levels and time trends. A common approach is to apply log-linear regression to calculate doubling and halving times of the POP concentrations based on the temporal trend observed in breast milk. However, there are different, sometimes conflic...

Atmospheric transport of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to Bjørnøya (Bear island).

A first medium term monitoring of atmospheric transport and distribution for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Bjørnøya (Bear island) air samples has been performed in the period between week 51/1999 and week 28/2003. A total of 50 single compounds consisting of polychlorinated biphenyls (33 congeners), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (alpha-, beta-, gamma-HCH), alp...

Persistent Organic Pollutants ("POPs")

Strictly speaking, all toxins entering the environment can be regarded as environmental poisons. Certain pollutants can, acting over long periods, harm living organisms even in low concentrations. This means that pollutants that are stable and thus persistent have a great ability to act as environmental poisons. Their stability means not only that their effects are long-lasting, but also that t...

Serum Persistent Organic Pollutants

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are manmade organic chemicals that remain in the environment for years or decades. POPs are of special concern because they often remain toxic for decades or longer after release to the environment. The more persistent a toxic chemical is, the greater the probability for human exposure over time. Because they circulate globally long after being released into...
